Costumes and makeup are a huge part of making characters memorable. Horror movies are no exception. Latex and fake blood are a common favorite.
Latex is used to create cuts, gashes, gouges, protrusions, and all sorts of other traumatic injuries and wounds for horror movies. The use of special latex glue and prefabricated latex "wounds" are applied to a character to simulate visually by a makeup artist.
The cherry on top is the fake blood. It has many uses. Apply it to the latex "wound" to give it a more realistic dramatic look, or swipe it all over clothing, rags, walls, and skin to make it look like a horror movie massacre.
