Foley sounds are a sound effect commonly used in the making of a horror movie. They are what bring the realism to the movie that you are watching. When filming a horror movie and adding in sound effects, often a Foley Sound Artist is used.
A Foley sound artist takes everyday ordinary objects and uses them to make sound effects. The coolest part is that when you are watching a movie and you hear that thud from a serial killer hitting the wall, the sound may have actually been made by a foley sound artist hitting a trashcan with a shoe! Maybe that footstep sound is actually a pair of wooden spoons being hit together at just the right interval.
Leaves crushing underfoot in the woods, that swoosh of wind when the bad guy runs by in the dark, the snapping of a twig. Chances are good that a foley sound artist was involved.
